The Certificate in Worship & Music is an innovative program designed for worship leaders, musicians, clergy, artists, and others who seek to deepen their understanding of worship as a vital expression of Christian faith, culture, and community. Grounded in the rich traditions of the Black Church and the African diaspora while engaging the broader Christian tradition, the program explores the biblical and theological foundations of worship, the history and development of sacred music, liturgical planning, congregational song, preaching and music, and the role of the arts in creating meaningful worship experiences. Particular attention is given to the African American spiritual, gospel music, hymns, contemporary sacred music, and other musical traditions that have sustained communities through struggle, celebration, lament, and hope. This course of study is not about musical performance. It is grounded in the idea that music is one among many ingredients of faithful worship.

 

Consistent with the justice-centered mission of the Justice Center, the certificate also examines worship as an instrument of spiritual formation, cultural memory, community building, and social transformation. Participants will develop practical skills for designing worship that is theologically grounded, culturally responsive, intergenerational, inclusive, and attentive to the realities facing communities today. Through self-paced learning, reflection, listening, creative projects, and practical application, participants will be equipped not simply to plan worship or perform music, but to cultivate sacred experiences that inspire faith, nurture belonging, preserve cultural traditions, and call communities toward healing, justice, and faithful action.
