Reverend Paul Roberts, Sr. is a theologian, educator, writer, and organizational leader dedicated to equipping people of faith for justice-centered ministry. As president of the Justice Center for Sacred Theological Studies (JCSTS), he is helping shape a new model of theological education that combines academic rigor, practical leadership development, and a deep commitment to social transformation. His work emphasizes competency-based learning, interfaith dialogue, spiritual formation, and the enduring witness of the Black Church.
Throughout his ministry, Paul has championed the intersection of faith and public life, writing and speaking on topics including reparations, voting rights, racial justice, worship as resistance, and the moral responsibilities of the church in contemporary society. He and his team have developed innovative educational programs for clergy and lay leaders, created resources that strengthen congregational leadership, and advocated for a theology that moves beyond reflection to faithful action. His work consistently invites people of faith to engage Scripture through the lenses of justice, liberation, and hope.
Paul is committed to preserving and celebrating the rich traditions of African American sacred music and worship. He believes that music, storytelling, prayer, and communal practices are indispensable resources for healing, resilience, and social change. His vision for intergenerational collaboration reflects his conviction that the wisdom of elders and the creativity of younger generations are both essential for the church’s future. As a public theologian, Paul seeks to make theological education accessible to wider audiences through digital media and in-person educational initiatives.
Paul holds degrees from Princeton University and the Interdenominational Theological Center. He was ordained in 1998 to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He has been a small church pastor, writer, lecturer, consultant and mentor. He has served on numerous civic and ecclesiastical boards.
Paul is an avid gardener and Bikram Yoga practitioner. He and his wife, Nina, have three adult children.
