The Justice Center for Sacred Theological Studies (JCSTS) is, at its core, a seminary. In today's terms, JCSTS is theological education and leadership development organization that equips people of faith to engage the world with wisdom, courage, and a commitment to justice. Through online learning, educational media, public conversations, and community partnerships, JCSTS prepares women and men to serve the church and society with integrity and compassion.

Our mission is "to enliven the human heart through education that centers Christ's justice." In other words, we strive to inspire, sensitize, even excite persons about doing and exhibiting courageous leadership in the example of Jesus Christ.

3. Is JCSTS affiliated with a particular denomination?

JCSTS is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). While we honor our Presbyterian heritage, we welcome learners from all Christian denominations and other faith traditions who seek thoughtful, justice-centered theological education.

4. What makes JCSTS different from other theological schools?

JCSTS emphasizes competency-based learning, practical leadership, and theological reflection that speaks directly to contemporary social issues. Online courses typically can be completed in one week to complete based on one hour of study per day.​

9. Do I need previous theological education?

No. Many JCSTS courses are designed for beginners, while others are intended for experienced ministry leaders. Academically, it is best for participants to have at least some college experience.

10. Are courses live or self-paced?

Most courses are asynchronous and self-paced. Throughout the year, JCSTS also offers live webinars, workshops, retreats, and special events that provide opportunities for interaction with faculty and guest speakers.

11. Will I receive a certificate?

Anyone who completes a course is eligible to receive a badge. To earn a certificate, a learner (student) must earn a minimum of seven (7) badges. Please review our Certificates page for more information.

12. Is there an application process?

Most online courses do not require a formal application. Learners simply register for the courses that interest them.

 

13. What technology do I need?

Participants need reliable internet access and a computer or tablet capable of streaming video and accessing online course materials. Some courses may recommend additional software or downloadable resources.

 

14. Can churches or organizations partner with JCSTS?

Absolutely. JCSTS collaborates with congregations, denominations, seminaries, nonprofits, foundations, and community organizations to develop educational programs, workshops, leadership initiatives, and public events.

 

15. Is JCSTS accredited?

No, JCSTS is not accredited. JCSTS relinquished its prior relationship with the Association of Theological Schools and with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in 2014 in order to pursue new, creative approaches to education.

16. Does JCSTS offer degrees?
