Creator of every season and Giver of every good gift,

We thank you for the rhythms of creation that remind us that life is always changing. As the warmth and abundance of summer begin to give way to the cooler days of fall, teach us to recognize your presence in every transition.

We give thanks for summer’s long days, green fields, gardens, journeys, gatherings, and moments of rest. As leaves begin to change and daylight shortens, remind us that all of life's seasons can carry beauty, wisdom, and grace. Help us release what has completed its season and openly receive what is now emerging.

Make us grateful stewards of the fruit produced by our labor and mindful of those who struggle for food, shelter, safety, and hope. May our gratitude become generosity and our blessings become instruments of justice.

And as other creatures of the earth embark on their autumnal preparations, teach us also to live at a sustainable pace, to listen deeply, to care for Mother Earth, and to trust your renewing Spirit.

Amen.

A well-known Mark 12 passages reads, "render unto Caesar what is Caesars." Here Jesus teaches that people have obligations to both earthly governments and to God. The two are not mutually exclusive as some would like to believe.

Election Day is November 3, 2026. Prepare by learning who your candidates are and what they stand for. Then, exercise your faith in the public arena by casting your ballot.

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Now Is a Great Time to Practice Moral Courage

The first followers of Christ were resisters. Christian worship was an act of resistance, as it directly challenged Roman imperial and religious authority. By refusing to worship Roman gods or the emperor, early Christians committed a subversive political and religious act that went against Roman cultural and political norms.

Two-thousand years later, Black faith communities in the Americas found ways to resist the oppressive cultural and political norms of the U.S. and Europe. Enslaved Africans gathered under moonlight, singing songs that carried secret maps to freedom. Preaching became protest. Hymns became resistance.

As soon as Blacks were free enough to do so, they built movements. They created schools when education was outlawed. They set up mutual aid societies and taught citizenship classes. They organized boycotts and freedom rides as acts of holy imagination.

Moral courage is at the heart of vibrant Christianity.

Tips for Equipping Yourself to Do Justice

Learn about systemic inequity, historical injustice, and implicit bias.

Interrupt discriminatory comments and practices when you see or hear them.

Expect pushback and stay calm.

Amplify the perspectives of underrepresented communities in decision-making spaces.

Volunteer with non-profit organizations that address economic and educational disparities.

Become a mentor or sponsor to persons of underrepresented backgrounds.
Discuss equity issues with family and friends to raise awareness and foster understanding.

Support criminal justice reform.

Make a friend with someone who doesn't look like you.

Plant a garden.

Don't Go It Alone

Justice work is never solitary. Communal prayer that incorporates lament and intercession builds solidarity, courage, and spiritual resilience. Communal Bible studies focusing on equity, fairness, and inclusion can be nurturing and eye-opening. Without these wellsprings of mutuality, justice work or ministry of any type will be exhausting, isolating, and unsustainable. Don't go it alone.

For Worship Leaders and Liturgists

In the early centuries of religious community life, the "Lector" or public reader of scripture held a formal office of significant importance. At a time when manuscripts were hand-copied and rare, the community depended entirely on public reading to know their sacred texts.

This historical weight remains relevant today. Even in an age where physical or electronic Bibles are prevalent, the act of reading the Word publicly in a shared space creates a communal identity that private reading alone cannot replicate. The reader's job is not to read scripture like a bedtime story. The reader's job is to be a witness to the text and to become an interpretive bridge between the text and the listener.
