About
This course examines the development of African American sacred music from its roots in West African traditions to contemporary expressions. Students will analyze the evolution of spirituals, the formalization of Black hymnody, and the birth of gospel music. The curriculum explores the intersection of music and social justice through freedom songs, the influence of jazz and blues on the sacred experience, and the current landscape of contemporary Black worship music. Participants will study how these musical forms have served as tools for theological expression and communal resilience throughout history.
